Since 2015, Clicks’ ‘IT Employment Confidence Index’ report has been measuring the confidence of IT professionals. We survey employees and job seekers each quarter to obtain insights into current sentiments. We ask respondents to reveal how they are feeling about:
- The conditions of the Australian economy and IT job market.
- Their job search intentions.
- Confidence levels about their job security and ability to secure work.
What does Click’s latest edition of the IT Employment Confidence Index report reveal?
IT professionals feel slightly less optimistic about the Australian economy, but that hasn’t dampened their confidence in their job prospects. This result makes sense. An ongoing pandemic, slower than expected immigration rates, and rising cost of living have impacted the Australian economy. On the other hand, these circumstances have largely fuelled the demand for IT professionals. The professional, scientific and technical services industry showed growth, with earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) increasing 19.2% ($6.4b)
Respondents aren’t worried about losing their jobs. The current proportion of people who believe they won’t lose their job has risen since last quarter. The recent figures are 152% higher than the seven-year average. The ABS reported that retrenchment figures have dropped in 2022. The proportion of people who lost their job due to retrenchment in the year ending February 2022 was 9.4%, compared to 21.7% in the preceding period.
Record high: proportion of IT professionals who are open to new jobs is the highest reported. Only 8% of those surveyed said they would not be looking for a new IT job in the next 12 months. The current skills shortage is driving salaries up and increasing flexibility – enticing people to enter the job market or be open to exploring new opportunities.
IT professionals are more confident in their ability to find work than ever before. The current level of self-assurance amongst tech staff is unsurprising. Our IT Workforce Insights Report reveals in the last twelve months; 82% of tech workers received at least one call about a job opportunity while 26% of respondents reported they were contacted ten times or more. Great candidates know they can secure multiple job offers in the current market – we’ve seen it firsthand. As a result, they are more selective and choosing to partner with recruitment agencies that can help them secure roles that offer flexibility, an ideal location, or their preferred salary.
With a recession looming, will the confidence levels amongst IT professionals continue to grow? We look forward to bringing you further insights next quarter.
