One Simple Step You Can Take To Significantly Improve Your Mood

Whether you are feeling upset, angry, sluggish or down – getting outside and going for a walk is an easy and effective way to lift your mood!

A 30-minute walk is ideal but taking a stroll for even 10 minutes can make you feel better. Why? As with any form of exercise, taking a walk increases your blood circulation and helps your body release endorphins and serotonin – your body’s natural mood enhancers. Going for a walk also acts as a circuit breaker. It allows you to step away and reflect on what’s going on. So next time you are feeling a bit ‘meh’, go outside and get moving! While you are at it, consider adding these steps to maximise the health benefits of going for a walk.

Walk through greenery

Studies have shown that people who spend at least two hours a week in green spaces such as parks or other natural environments are significantly more likely to report positive physical and psychological well-being compared to those who do not reach this amount. It is thought that being in nature relaxes the body and mind as it draws on less effort from our attention.

Take a morning walk

A morning walk can help set your body’s internal clock and improve sleep. It also helps you feel more alert and energised throughout the day. Taking a walk on the bright side is linked to other health benefits and is a great way to naturally increase your melatonin levels which aids sleep.

Ground yourself

You may have heard that being mindful and fully present is a great way to relax your mind and body and reduce stress. A great way to incorporate mindfulness in your walks is to apply the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 grounding technique. Take a few deep breathes and name 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. Even if you cannot tick everything off this list, any attempt is still beneficial and calming, as it draws your focus to a more mindful state. Try it and see what difference it makes!

Enjoy your walk! As always, please let us know if there are any topics you would love us to look into or you have any queries or feedback. You can reach us at marketing@clicks.com.au
