Tips for Adopting a Cat!

Cats make wonderful companions, and adopting a feline friend can be a great addition to your family. However, before you rush out to adopt a cat, there are a few things you should consider to ensure that you are ready for the responsibility and that you choose the right cat for you.

In this week’s Wellness Matters, we’ve collated some tips to help you prepare for and choose the perfect feline friend!

1. Consider your lifestyle

Before getting a cat, it’s important to consider your lifestyle and whether you have the time and resources to care for a pet. Cats require daily attention, including feeding, litter box cleaning, and playtime. If you work long hours or travel frequently, it may not be the best time to adopt a cat. Additionally, consider whether you have any allergies or other health issues that could be aggravated by having a cat.

2. Choose the right cat for you

When choosing a cat, it’s important to consider your lifestyle and personality to find a cat that is compatible with you. Some cats are more social and require more attention, while others are more independent and prefer to be left alone. Consider the cat’s age, temperament, and activity level to find the right match for your lifestyle. Here is a guide to find suitable breeds for you!

3. Adopt from a reputable shelter

Adopting a cat from a reputable shelter or rescue organisation is a great way to give a cat a second chance. These organisations often provide medical care, behavioural assessments, and other services to ensure that the cats are healthy and well-adjusted before adoption. Additionally, many shelters and rescue organisations offer guidance and support to help new cat owners adjust to life with a feline friend. Pet rescue has a list of shelters housing animals around Australia. Fostering is always an option too!

4. Prepare your home

Before bringing a cat home, make sure that your home is safe and welcoming for your new furry friend. Cats are curious creatures and can easily get into mischief, so make sure that dangerous objects and toxic substances are stored safely out of reach. Some common houseplants are very toxic to cats, so ensure you do not have them in your home.

Additionally, provide a comfortable and stimulating environment for your cat, including a soft bed, toys, scratching posts, and a variety of perches and hideaways.

5. Timing is everything

When it comes to adopting a cat, timing is everything. If you have a busy schedule or are planning a major life change, such as moving or having a baby, it may not be the best time to bring a cat into your home. Additionally, consider whether you have the time and resources to care for a cat for the duration of its lifespan, which can be up to 20 years. The best environment a new cat can come home to is one that is calm and relaxed. If possible, arrange to bring your cat home at the start of a weekend.

Adopting a cat can be a wonderful and rewarding experience, but it’s important to be prepared and choose the right cat for your lifestyle. By considering your lifestyle, choosing the right cat, adopting from a reputable shelter, preparing your home, and timing your adoption carefully, you can give a cat a loving home and enjoy the companionship of a feline friend for many years to come.
