Tips for Adopting a Dog!

Adopting a dog can be a truly fulfilling experience, especially if you are a first-time pet owner. However, it is important to understand the responsibilities that come with being a dog owner.

In this week’s Wellness Matters, we’ve collated some tips to help you have a positive experience when adopting your pup!

1. Choose the right breed

Choosing the right breed is important – it’s not just about looks. Different breeds have different needs and personalities, so make sure you do your research to find a breed that fits your lifestyle. For example, if you live in a small apartment, a big dog might not be the best option.

Dogs Australia can help to find the right breed for you!

2. Adopt from a shelter

Many dogs end up in shelters because their owners could no longer care for them. By adopting a dog from a shelter, you give it a second chance at finding a loving home. Additionally, many shelters offer support services and advice to help you care for your new pet.

3. Understand your legal obligation

In Australia, owning a dog comes with a couple of legal obligations. These can include registering your dog with your local council and microchipping your dog.

Additionally, dogs may need to be on a leash in public areas and are not allowed in certain places such as most playgrounds and beaches.

Read more about the specific laws in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and the ACT.

4. Prepare your home

Similarly to adopting a cat, there are some things you can do to get your house ready for your new pup.

This means removing any toxic plants or chemicals and making sure your garden is secure. You’ll also need to think about where your dog will sleep and eat.

5. Train and socialise your dog

Training is important for both you and your dog. It helps your dog understand what’s expected of them and can prevent behaviour problems down the line. Enrolling in a puppy class or working with a trainer can be a great way to get started.

Additionally, socialise your dog by introducing it to other dogs and people in a controlled environment.

6. Provide exercise and mental stimulation

Dogs need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. This means going for walks, playing fetch, and providing toys and puzzles for your dog to play with.

There are some symptoms of doggy boredom, including chewing furniture and shoes, shredding pillows and creating large messes.

Here are some further symptoms and solutions to solve the problem!

By following these tips, you can make sure your new dog is happy, healthy, and well-cared for.
