Cloud Engineer - AWS and Data Focussed
Location: Canberra or Adelaide
Baseline Security Clearence manditory
Term: 12 months + 2 × 12‑month extension options

As a Cloud Engineer, you will work within a multidisciplinary technical team focused on the delivery and operation of secure, scalable cloud‑based data platforms. You'll contribute to solution design, build automated and resilient data pipelines, ensure robust cloud security practices, and collaborate closely with project, platform and security teams.
This role is ideal for a senior engineer who thrives in complex environments, enjoys solving challenging data problems, and brings strong hands‑on AWS experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build and manage secure, scalable cloud data platforms and pipelines.
- Develop and optimise batch and streaming data pipelines using AWS technologies such as S3, Glue, Lambda, Step Functions, Kinesis, Redshift and Athena.
- Identify risks, issues and improvement opportunities across data and platform ecosystems.
- Apply cloud security best practices including IAM, encryption, logging, networking and secure‑by‑design principles.
- Monitor, troubleshoot and support cloud‑based data solutions with modern observability tools.
- Produce clear technical documentation including architecture diagrams, data flows and operational procedures.
- Collaborate effectively with technical and non‑technical stakeholders across delivery and platform teams.
- Stay current with emerging AWS services and data engineering technologies.
Skills & Experience
Mandatory
- Hands‑on experience with DynamoDB and relational database technologies.
- Strong knowledge of data formats and storage layers such as Parquet, Delta Lake and Iceberg.
- Proficiency in Java (Maven), Scala and Python.
- Strong practical experience with Apache Spark.
- Proven capability delivering end‑to‑end data pipelines (ingestion through to curated outputs).
- Experience with IaC tools such as Terraform and/or AWS CDK.
- Solid understanding of AWS security fundamentals.
- Experience with DevOps/GitOps tooling including CI/CD and version control.
Highly Desirable
- Experience with streaming/event‑driven systems (Kafka, Kinesis, Pub/Sub).
- Understanding of lakehouse architectures, metadata management and data governance practices.
- Exposure to tools such as Lake Formation and Glue Data Catalog.
- Experience with cloud cost optimisation.
- Background in automated testing.
