Cloud Architect - API Gateway Platform (AWS)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Cloud Architect to lead the design and evolution of a large-scale, enterprise API gateway platform. This role sits at the intersection of strategy and hands-on delivery-ideal for someone who can shape architecture while remaining close to implementation details.

You will play a key role in designing a modern API platform that supports high-volume, mission-critical services, ensuring scalability, security, and developer productivity.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the end-to-end design of the target-state API gateway platform.
• Define logical architecture, including request flows covering authentication, authorisation, throttling, caching, and routing.
• Design AWS infrastructure across VPCs, IAM, networking, and deployment topology.
• Establish architecture decision records (ADRs) to guide platform design, security posture, and operations.
• Define integration boundaries between gateway capabilities and existing edge/security layers.
• Design reusable patterns for logging, error handling, correlation, validation, and observability.
• Produce reference implementations and pattern catalogues for engineering teams.
• Evaluate architectural options and document trade-offs.
• Define API lifecycle standards including development, testing, and deployment processes.
• Create reusable infrastructure-as-code patterns (CloudFormation / CDK).
• Design CI/CD pipeline templates and governance automation (linting, quality gates, compliance checks).

• Deep AWS architecture experience, particularly with API Gateway (authorisers, throttling, caching, usage plans).
• Proven track record designing enterprise-scale API platforms.
• Strong hands-on API development background (REST) with experience in production systems.
• Working proficiency in TypeScript and/or C# .NET.
• Expertise in AWS IAM, CloudFormation/CDK, and infrastructure-as-code principles.
• Experience across AWS services including Lambda, ECS/EKS, S3, DynamoDB, CloudWatch.
• Strong CI/CD design experience supporting multi-environment deployments and release strategies.
• Ability to produce high-quality architecture artefacts suitable for formal review and governance.
• Experience with API platforms such as Apigee, MuleSoft, Kong.
• Knowledge of OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and identity federation.
• Experience with API migration strategies and controlled cutovers.
