System Engineer

Our client is seeking an experienced System Engineer to take ownership of their Microsoft 365 environment, cloud platforms, infrastructure, security initiatives and technology improvement projects. This is a hands-on role suited to a senior technical professional who enjoys solving complex problems, improving systems and working across a broad technology landscape. The role supports a multi-site environment and works closely with an external managed service provider to ensure reliable, secure and effective IT operations. 

The Opportunity
As the Level 3 System Engineer, you will provide senior escalation support, manage critical systems and lead infrastructure and cybersecurity initiatives. You'll play a key role in maintaining operational stability while identifying opportunities for technology improvement, automation and service optimisation. 
Working closely with internal stakeholders and external technology partners, you will oversee the day-to-day management of Microsoft technologies, endpoint management, networking infrastructure and security platforms while contributing to strategic IT projects. 

Key Responsibilities

• Provide Level 3 technical support and complex incident resolution.
• Conduct root cause analysis and implement preventative measures.
• Administer Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, SharePoint, Entra ID and Microsoft Teams Phone.
• Manage Microsoft Intune and endpoint device management.
• Support infrastructure including firewalls, routers, switches, wireless networks and printers.
• Manage monitoring, backup, antivirus and patch management platforms.
• Lead infrastructure improvement, lifecycle management and optimisation initiatives.
• Enhance cybersecurity controls including Conditional Access, endpoint protection and security monitoring.
• Support vulnerability management, threat detection and incident response activities.
• Develop and maintain technical documentation, policies and procedures.
• Identify opportunities for automation and continuous improvement. 

About You
You are a senior infrastructure professional who combines strong technical capability with sound stakeholder engagement skills. You enjoy taking ownership of technology environments, driving improvements and providing trusted technical advice.
You will bring:

• Degree qualifications in Information Technology, Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent commercial experience.
• Five or more years' experience in senior systems engineering, infrastructure support or systems administration roles.
• Strong Microsoft 365 expertise including Exchange Online, SharePoint, Entra ID, Teams and Intune.
• Experience managing infrastructure across multiple sites.
• Demonstrated experience delivering technical projects and system improvements.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
• Experience working with cybersecurity frameworks, controls and incident response activities.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience within the not-for-profit sector is highly regarded but not essential.
