Choose Joy: Simple Ways to Boost Everyday Happiness

As summer winds down and autumn settles in, the days begin to shorten, the air cools, and life naturally shifts into a slower rhythm. For some, this seasonal change feels refreshing; a welcome break from the intensity of long, hot days. For others, the reduced sunlight and busier routines can create dips in energy or mood.

That’s why this time of year is perfect for refocusing on small habits that support happiness and wellbeing. With a little intention, the transition into autumn can feel grounding, comforting and full of simple joy.

Happiness isn’t as elusive as it sometimes feels. In fact, the biggest boosts often come from the small, intentional moments woven throughout your day. Things like listening to your favourite song, reconnecting with someone you miss, or getting lost in a really good book.

During times of work, financial and family pressures, the feeling of happiness can sometimes be overlooked, or missed, or overridden. So, we’ve taken some time to explore what happiness really means, why it matters, and the simple habits that can bring more of it into your everyday life.

So, What Does Happiness Really Mean?

Happiness looks and feels different for everyone. According to positive psychology, there are two main ways to build authentic, lasting wellbeing:

Live an Engaged Life

This means showing up fully. At work, at home, in your relationships and hobbies. When you immerse yourself in the things that matter to you, you naturally feel more fulfilled.

Find Purpose Beyond Yourself

Meaning often comes from contributing to something bigger; your community, your family, or a cause you truly care about. It’s about using your strengths in ways that positively impact the world around you.

Emotions Can Be Catchy

Just like a seasonal cold, emotions spread quickly. The energy of the people you spend time with can influence your own mood, sometimes without you even realising it.

While it’s impossible to feel happy all the time, you can choose how engaged you are in your own life and how you respond to the emotional climate around you. Intention and awareness go a long way in maintaining your wellbeing.

Small Kindnesses Big Impact

Kindness is one of the most powerful happiness hacks out there, and it doesn’t have to be grand or complicated.

A simple gesture, like receiving flowers from a friend on a tough day, can turn everything around. These small acts leave a lasting impression on both the giver and the receiver.

Here are some ways to sprinkle a little kindness into your day:

  • Reconnect with someone you haven’t spoken to in a while
  • Cook dinner for your household
  • Do the dishes even when it’s not your turn
  • Give your seat to someone on the train
  • Offer a sincere compliment
  • Send someone a message “just because”

These actions don’t just brighten someone else’s day. They boost your own mood too.

Be Fully Present

yes, that means putting the phone away.

If you want to instantly improve your connections, try being truly present. Especially during mealtimes. Keeping your phone on silent in another room helps create space for deeper conversations and stronger emotional bonds with the people you care about.

Presence is a skill, and it pays off.

Food is a Big Mood

What you eat can have a surprising influence on your emotional wellbeing. Everyday ingredients like:

  • Ginger
  • Broccoli
  • Blueberries

are not only delicious but can support mood regulation and overall health.

Nutrients like serotonin, selenium, vitamin B and dopamine can be influenced by the foods you choose or, if necessary, through supplements. Nourishing your body with the right fuel can set the stage for a happier, more balanced mind.

Big Joy in Little Things

In the end, happiness often hides in small, easily overlooked moments. And these are the ones that can often make you pause, take note and smile.

  • Peeling the sticker off a new purchase in one go
  • Spotting a puppy on your morning walk
  • Giving someone the perfect birthday present
  • Helping a friend or colleague master something tricky

These moments matter. They accumulate, creating a life that feels lighter, warmer and more joyful.
