How to Write a Resignation Letter

Resignation Letter Template Provided – Australia 2022

Whilst it may sound old-fashioned in this day and age, if you are leaving a job you do still need to provide your employer with a signed letter of resignation. So, here’s how you do it.

A resignation letter should be positive and professional. After all, it’s a legal document that forms part of your employee file. Moreover, writing a proper resignation letter will help your career in the long run – especially if you work in a small industry or need your current manager to act as a referee in the future.

What should I include?

Besides your details, position title, and company details, the most crucial aspect of a resignation letter is the date to reflect when your notice period begins and the date of your last working day. Check the notice period stated in your Employment Agreement. Your legal required notice period may vary from your Employment Agreement based on Australian Fair Work regulations

What to avoid?

There is no need for wordy and emotional sentiments or a critique of the organisation in your resignation letter. You can provide your reasons for leaving when you resign in person. Positive or constructive detail can be reserved for your farewell speech, departing email, and exit interview. When it comes to your resignation letter, stick to the facts, and keep it short. What should the style and tone be?

Your resignation letter will last on the company records long after you are gone. Therefore, the style and tone of your resignation letter should be respectful and courteous. If you ever apply to work at the same company again because your reasons for leaving are no longer valid, or if the hiring manager you resigned to now works where you are applying for work, you’ll want to create a positive impression when they recall the details of your exit. Review your letter to see if you come across as professional and friendly. Do you seem helpful and eager to ensure a smooth transition before your departure?
