Taking Time to Exercise Your Brain

As by now you are all very aware, the gym is my life. It was such a blow to discover the new restrictions in place. But rather than dwell on the negative, I’m focusing on rekindling (pardon the pun) my love of books – digital and paperback. After all, the brain is the biggest muscle in the human body so why not exercise it! Here’s my list of some easy ways to absorb more literature – with some great tips for free and without needing to access a bookshop!

The Real Deal, Paperback or Hardcover

There’s something that just feels right about picking up a physical copy of a book. Feeling the weight it has in your hands while you read it, it feels like an achievement when you’ve actually completed it and can put it down. It’s also a great way to spend some free time that doesn’t involve switching on the TV and flicking to the next episode of that series you’re watching.

My current read is Dale Carnegie’s, How to Win Friends and Influence People in the Digital Age.

Kindle

Arguably the best e-reading experience you can buy, the Kindle comes in a range of prices to suit most budgets. Prices start around $110 with the mid-tier offering being the best bang-for-your-buck, with an IPX8 water-proof rating making it perfect substitute for your books if you like to read in the bath or by the pool.

There is also the Kindle Oasis. This is the luxury model, starting at around $250. Although similar to its predecessor, it has super lightweight construction and a new colour-adjustable front light to warm or cool the screen’s illumination. This helps make for easy reading at any time of the day or night.

Audible

‘Reading’ has never been easier, so if you often find that you simply don’t have the time to sit down and read, then Audible might just be the answer for you. Unlike a regular book or even a Kindle, you don’t have to actually read the words off the ‘page’. Instead, Audible has a massive library, from the bestselling audiobooks to exclusive podcasts. So the next time you’re going on a long road-trip, or even doing some chores around the house why not listen to that book you’ve always wanted to read?

I started my first month last weekend, and the free audiobook I chose is Ant Middleton’s, Mind Over Muscle.

Your Local Library

Even though libraries have closed due to precautionary measures, their online resources are as ready for you as ever. Many libraries have ebooks, audiobooks, movies, e-comics and even virtual story time for the kids available online. Now you will have to check your local library’s website for how to access their online resources, as not all will be readily available for free.

However, if you’re looking for a way to entertain the entire family it’s definitely worth having a look. If you have little ones running around, here’s a list of libraries around the country that are offering virtual storytimes.

Do You Prefer to Read or Listen?

Whether you prefer to find a quiet place and relax while reading, or you’d prefer to get your things done and listen to an audiobook as you go, there’s something for everyone. I’ve highlighted the two books that I’m currently working my way through. I would love to know what you’re reading, and if you prefer reading or listening to an audiobook.

Feel free to reach out to me on my email here with any book recommendations, or even if you have another e-book reader that you prefer.
