Just about every state in Australia has a horse racing carnival around this time of year. None bigger, of course, than the Spring Racing Carnival’s Melbourne Cup. We all know it’s ‘the race that stops the nation’.
In Victoria it truly does stop everything, and is a public holiday. Around the rest of Australia, the merriment usually involves a lot of eating and maybe a glass or two of bubbly in between races.
If you’re doing some entertaining this year while watching the races, we’ve come up with some delicious healthy menu ideas. Cut down the calories and keep that summer bod on track with this yummy feast:
Start with some crudités with tuna and bean dip, and then get into some low-carb mains: try California grilled chicken or a lettuce cheese burger topped with some homemade ketchup. Serve a chickpea salad on the side, and of course you’ll need to finish with something sweet. For the chocophiles there are healthy Ferrero Rocher truffles, followed by a rhubarb and strawberry quinoa crumble. Wash it all down with a refreshing pomegranate and coconut infused mocktail to feel really festive.
If you’re going to be trackside for a race, we have three Wellness Tips for you:
- Remember to wear sunscreen if you’re not under cover, and re-apply every few hours.
- Drink plenty of water. If you’re in the sun all day you’re at risk of dehydration, and that’s no fun.
- Wear comfy shoes! You might be on your feet for many hours. Wearing a new pair for the first time might need some pre-work.
Wherever you are, and whichever races you’re watching, we wish you a fun and safe day, and hope that Lady Luck is on your side!
We’d love to hear how you go! So if you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to drop us a line here.
